    History Club

History Club's first activity of the year is a DUKW ride on the historic Wisconsin River.  If you have never been on a Duck ride this is a great opportunity to ride on a piece of history.  If you have been on the Ducks before, it will be fun to go again with some friends. You’ve all seen them; a DUKW, also called duck, is a 2.5-ton six-wheel amphibious truck used in World War II by the U.S. Army and Marine Corps. Its primary purpose was to ferry ammunition, supplies, and equipment from supply ships in transport areas offshore to supply dumps and fighting units at the beach.  We will also hear from our tour guide some of the History of the Wisconsin River and the Wisconsin Dells area along the river and Lake Delton.  The Duck ride activity will take place next Tuesday September 21st at 3:50 after school.  We will meet at the Original Wisconsin Ducks Parking lot at 3:45 to get organized and load onto the Duck for the tour.  Any History Club members that are interested in going on the ride please let Mr. Baker know.  If you are not a history club member and would like to come along, please talk with Mr. Baker.  New members are always welcome however we would like to have an idea of the number of people that will be coming.

    Mask Requirement

I need to start by reiterating that the high school is under a temporary mask mandate, effective now through Sep 29. Just a few thoughts and some perspective, maybe even a rationale or two. I know how deeply unpopular this is. The thought of having to wear a mask much less enforce a requirement is very distasteful to me. While this was a unanimous team decision, it was a reluctant step.

Here are a couple of reasons why we are taking this move: I detested sending students home last year. Many students lost weeks of school and that impacts learning. It was agonizing to have students miss athletic contests, music performances and other extracurricular opportunities. It wasn’t fun to walk into classrooms and see the expressions on student’s faces become anxious wondering if they were next to be called out of the building.

Fast forward to this year and many of the same concerns remain. While we are not telling close contacts, they have to go home, we are still seeing a lot of students becoming ill and based on those symptoms, they are required to leave and get a test. Many classes are just starting to have their first quizzes and tests and it is not ideal to fall behind and miss assessments early in the year. Our Football and Soccer teams are undefeated, the other sports teams are in the mix for conference championships, our musical groups are readying for Wo-Zha-Wa or other performances. In other words, we have a lot of positives happening right now and this particular illness can wipe all of that out at a moment’s notice. We simply don’t want students getting sick and missing opportunities.

At the end of the day, one may disagree with everything I’ve said and argue the points I’ve made but the bottom line this decision was made with everyone’s best interests in mind and that is the direction we are going. So, wear your mask, there is an end date, and let’s get through this by being supportive of each other.
