Dear Parents & Caregivers,

May is upon us, and for all intents and purposes, this is the last month of the school year. Please take notice that the district has one final calendar adjustment, which will be communicated at various levels. Previously, the district modified the school calendar due to inclement weather and the need to make up lost instructional time, as the middle and high schools were just short of their required 1,137 instructional hours. The calendar revision will see elementary students have their last day of school being a full day on Thursday, June 4, 2026. Middle and high school students will see their last day being Friday, June 5th, with an early release day schedule.

SCHOLARSHIP & GRADUATION EVENTS

The annual WDHS & WDEF scholarship program will be held on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, beginning at 6:00 pm. Once again, our program will be at the amazing Nelson Family PAC, and participants will enjoy the comfort of theater seating as well as the exceptional sound and sightlines of this wonderful facility. While most scholarships remain a surprise, every student who is awarded a scholarship is well-deserved. Our students are fortunate to live in such a generous community, and we can’t thank everyone enough for their significant charitable investments in the youth of this community. The district looks forward to revealing the final dollar amount awarded to the members of the class of 2026. Undoubtedly, it will be another record-setting amount, and that’s a good thing because the costs associated with attending a technical college or four-year university continue to climb. These scholarship dollars really do change the trajectory of a student’s life, and it is truly so amazing and gratifying to witness!

Secondly, graduation is scheduled for Friday, May 22, 2026, with the commencement ceremony beginning at 5:30 pm sharp at the WDHS outdoor athletic complex. In the event of inclement weather, the district will make the decision to pivot and move the ceremony to Jack B. Olson Court. This information will be communicated in a timely manner. We look forward to celebrating and recognizing each graduating member of the class of 2026. We hope to see you there!

2026-27 BUDGET PLANNING

With the recent referendum results, our administration is in the process of making alterations to the 2026-27 budget cycle. Our business office is aiming to present next year’s budget at the first board meeting in June. Over the course of the next five to six weeks, the district will look to curb or discontinue expenses, and this will include scaling back on filling some positions in the district. At the time of drafting this article, the district is facing a structural budget deficit of $1.2 million. The largest reasons for the deficit are a lack of new revenue from federal and state budgets, as well as rising costs beyond the district’s control. More information will be shared at each board meeting leading up to the budget presentation in early June. Undoubtedly, the district is very likely going to have to seek an operating question again in November of 2026. However, the district will most certainly seek a way to mitigate future tax impacts, and part of this includes scaling back district expenses moving forward. In closing, the school finance system is extensively broken and needs to be revamped since the current model was developed in 1993, which was 33 years ago. The state needs to find a system that is more sustainable, less reliant on property taxes, and provides base revenues for districts such as Wisconsin Dells, which has extremely high property values and a student population in which 60% of families qualify for free or reduced meals.

Despite these fiscal challenges, the school remains focused on delivering high-quality instruction to our students each day to support their academic growth and inspire them to achieve in areas they are passionate about. Finally, let me close out this newsletter article by saying thank you for the opportunity to serve our community’s children, for it is both our highest priority and privilege to do so!

Have a great month!

Respectfully submitted,

Terrance Slack, District Administrator
