Comprehensive School Counseling Program

Please see individual school pages for detailed counseling information and links

Overview

The ultimate goal of school counseling program is student learning and achievement. The program's design, delivery system, and content focuses on enhancing the ability of all individuals to utilize the educational opportunities available to them, and includes the elements of school counseling curriculum, individual student planning, responsive services and system support. The three domains which the school counseling program embraces - academic development, personal/social growth, and career development - cannot be addressed without learning taking place. A comprehensive school counseling program focuses on what all students, from pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade, should know, understand, and be able to do within these domains in order to develop into contributing members of our society. The school counseling curriculum, individual student planning, responsive services and system support are the vehicles through which this is accomplished.

School counseling program is an integral part of students' daily educational environments, and the program is designed to produce positive changes in student behavior and student learning. Outcomes include increased academic achievement, improved attendance, social-behavioral skill development, individual planning and family/community involvement (see: Standards for School Counseling Programs, below). In this regard, school counseling programs are an integral part of the entire educational experience.

The purpose of the school counseling program is to provide and support the delivery of specific skills and information in a proactive, preventive manner to ensure that all students have the opportunity to achieve school success. It also serves to provide intervention and referral services for those students who are experiencing difficulties in their lives which interfere with their academic achievement. The school counselor serves as the program leader, and collaborates with other pupil services personnel as well as other school staff in the delivery of services.
